Commentary:
This work is a copy after Giambattista Tiepolo’s The Prophet Daniel in the Red Room (Sala Rossa) at the Palazzo Patriarcale (now Archiepiscopal Palace) in Udine, Italy. Tiepolo was commissioned by Dionisio Dolfin in 1726 to paint several areas of the Palazzo Patriarcale. The Red Room was used as an ecclesiastical tribunal making the subjects that Tiepolo painted in the room very fitting. These central ceiling subject included The Judgement of King Solomon with the prophets Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Daniel depicted in the corners. The subject in this work was formally identified as John the Evangelist (Alasko); however, the subject with lions at his feet is now identified as the prophet Daniel. ZL
