Commentary:
The work was formally attributed to Giuseppe Cesari (Il Cavaliere d’Arpino) and an Imitator of Giuseppe Cesari in 1997, based on a drawing by Giuseppe Cesari (Cavaliere d’Arpino) in the Louvre (inv. 3004).  Nevertheless, the work is directly after a detail from the The Peace of Nice by Francesco Salviati from the Sala dei fasti Farnesiani (Room of the Achievements or History of the Farnese) or Salotto Dipinto in the Palazzo Farnese, Rome.  At the death of Salviati in 1563, the rest of the fresco program was completed by Taddeo Zuccaro and his brother Federico Zuccaro in 1566.

The scene commemorates the treaty of the Peace of Nice negotiated by Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) between Francis I and Charles V in 1538.  The style of the work recalls that of Antiquity and the reliefs of celebrating Marcus Aurelius in the Capitoline Museum thereby corresponding to the overarching theme identifying the Farnese as descendants of Aeneas. The room or salotto functioned as an antechamber to the great hall.  CMP
