Commentary:

This drawing was identified in 1997 as the work of an imitator of Federico Barocci basing it off of Barocci’s Madonna and Child on Clouds engraving, prints of which can be found in the Art Institute Chicago, Saint Louis Art Museum, and the National Gallery, as well as many more locations. That engraving can then be connected to the drawings in preparation for an altarpiece of The Virgin and Child Appearing to Saint Francis and John the Baptist, as can be seen at the British Museum (Alasko). Nevertheless, this drawing most closely resembles another Barocci drawing of The Virgin and Child with Saint Francis held by the Fitzwilliam Museum. It is important to note, however, that they are not exact replicas, which suggests that it is not in fact an imitator, but rather Barocci himself. KF
